FACT-CHECK: Is Buhari’s Claim on #EndSARS Protest Coverage by CNN, BBC True?

By Fact Check

VERDICT: FALSE

CLAIM: On December 9, 2020, the Twitter handle of the President of Nigeria @Mbuhari tweeted that the coverage of #EndSARS protest by foreign media was not balanced.

The president’s tweet claims that the CNN and BBC did not give attention to the police officers who were killed, the stations that were burnt, and prisons that were invaded.

As at the time of reporting, it has been retweeted by 6700 Twitter users and liked by 9100 times. Multiple media houses including national dailies reported the content of the tweet.

The President’s Spokesperson acknowledged this in a tweet he made on December 11, two days after the President made the false claim.

FACT:

The claim by the President that the CNN and BBC did not give attention to the Police officer killed, the stations that were burnt, and the invasion of prisons during the #EndSARS protest is false.

A review of the reportage of the #EndSARS protests by the two media organizations also show the claim to be false.

Two days after, the BBC reported the attack on the Ikoyi and Warri Prisons in two different reports.

The CNN also reported the Ikoyi Prison incident in this report: Prison set on fire in Nigeria as protest death toll rises to at least 56.

On October 22, 2020, the BBC did an extensive report on the Fake News that went viral on the EndSARS protest on its Reality Check done by Peter Mwai, Nigeria Sars protest: The misinformation circulating online

On October 23, 2020, the BBC reported the reaction of President Muhammadu Buhari to the protest on its World Service. Nigeria protests: President Buhari says 69 killed in unrest

In a widely publiced interview, the governor of Lagos state Babajide Sanwo-Olu told CNN’s Becky Anderson he believes there will be ‘genuine reforms’ of police following EndSARS protests.

The CNN said it was an opportunity to hear the government’s side of the story.

Our review of the reports also shows that the two international media organizations sort and featured the reaction and postion of the government in most of the reports.

Days after it has become apperant to the Presidency that the claim is false, the tweet is yet to be taken down and formal apology tendered.

CONCLUSION

The claim by President Muhammadu Buhari through his Twitter handle (@MBuhari) that the CNN and BBC did not give attention to the policemen that were killed, the stations that were burnt, and prisons that were opened is false.

CDD is urging handlers of Government Communications channels to always verify all information before disseminating as sharing of false information will continue to reduce the citizen’s trust in the government.

FACT CHECK: President Buhari Never Asked Dauda Rarara To Raise Money To Sing For Him

By Fact Check

VERDICT: False!

CLAIM:

On Wednesday, September 16, 2020, fact-checkers at the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) spotted a one-minute 59 seconds video audio clip claiming that President Muhammadu Buhari had directed Northern singer, Dauda Rarara, to raise money from Nigerians to produce a song for him.

In the widely circulated audio recorded in Hausa, the speaker can be heard saying that President Buhari directed the singer to receive the donation from Nigerians because the Federal Government lacks fund to execute the singing project.

FACT:

Investigations by CDD on the claim shows that President Buhari did not ask Rarara to raise money from Nigerians to sing for him.

Bashir Ahmad, the Personal Assistant on New Media to President Buhari, told CDD fact-checker that at no point did his principal issue such a request.

Bashir said: “It is absolutely false. President Buhari is neither aware nor has hand in Dauda Kahutu Rarara’s resolve to raise money and sing for him. The singer himself has not said Buhari asked him to get the N1000 donation from Nigerians”.

Continuing, Ahmad said: “In all the interviews he granted, the singer has explained why he wanted Buhari’s supporters to send him N1000 each so he could highlight the President’s achievements”.

Also speaking to a CDD fact-checker, the secretary of Rarara Multimedia Company, Aminu Afandaj. Said the President never asked the singer to raise money for the praise singing.

Afandaj told CDD fact-checkers that: “President Buhari is not even aware of the whole initiative because he wasn’t informed about it, if he later knows about it he might have heard about it as news.

“Therefore the President has nothing to do with asking Rarara to generate money, it’s so unprofessional for medium to put out such news, it’s a big lie,” Afandaj said.

CONCLUSION

The report claiming that President Buhari has asked a Northern singer to raise money to sing for him is false.

The widely circulating audio claiming that President Buhari has asked the singer to raise money to sing for him from Nigerians should be disregarded.

By Fact Check

Verdict: True!

CLAIM:

On Thursday, September 10, 2020, several Facebook posts spotted by CDD fact-checkers claimed that a famous Northern musician, Dauda Adamu Abdullahi Rarara, launched a fundraiser for the release of a new song in support of President Muhammdu Buhari.

An online newspaper Kainuwa24 on its Facebook page said that Dauda Kahutu Rarara had asked Nigerians to donate N1,000 and above so he could sing for President Buhari.

Also, a Kano-based radio station, Express Radio published the story stating that the singer had asked that the money be deposited into his bank account. This is in addition to a publication by Radio France International Hausa captioned Rarara stops singing for Buhari.

The report circulating widely online also claimed that the singer had stopped singer praises for the President.

FACT:

An investigation conducted by CDD shows that the famous Northern musician launched a fundraiser targeting supporters of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The funds raised, CDD found out is for the release of a new song on President Buhari’s 192 projects.

Confirming the fundraising for the song, the secretary of Rarara Multimedia Company, Aminu Afandaj, said the musician wants Nigerians to support the President’s effort.

Afandaj said: “Rarara wants the Nigerian masses that support Buhari to fund the song with not above N1000 donation, he doesn’t any rich man or political appointee regardless of their position to donate”.

Rarara’s secretary added that: “The donation has already commenced is scheduled to last for three weeks, the idea is to allow supporters of Buhari fund the song that will highlight the achievements and 192 projects done by Buhari administration”.

However, Afandaj said the claim that Dauda Rarara has stopped singing for the President is false

He added: “Why will Rarara inform Nigerians about his new song on the President if he has stopped singing for him? I am assuring you he still sings for the President and his party and the new song Kainuwa will soon get to Nigerians”.

CONCLUSION:

The story widely circulating that Dauda Kahutu Rarara has urged Nigerians to donate N1,000 for him to sing for President is true.

However, the claim that the singer has stopped singing for the President as reported by many local and international media is false.

DELTA DILEMMAS: Buhari and Nigeria's South-South Zone

By PublicationNo Comments
This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is image.png

The oil-rich Niger Delta region has been a policy and political challenge to successive administrations in Nigeria since the 1960s. Between 1999 and 2015 it featured prominently in the policy priorities of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

This has not been the case with President Muhammadu Buhari, whose election to office in 2015 was based on an overarching promise of ‘change’,
with a specific focus on tackling insecurity, corruption and youth employment.

There was no clear-cut policy agenda for Nigeria’s Niger Delta region at the beginning of President Buhari’s administration in 2015. But the challenges that made the Niger Delta a policy priority to previous governments
remained much the same as they always had.

The oil industry continued to be the main source of public revenue for the Nigerian government. The development deficits that contribute to
armed militancy and protests by ethnic minorities in the region also persisted.

FACT CHECK: Did President Buhari Meet 5 Katsina LGA Chairmen Over Insecurity?

By Fact Check, UncategorizedNo Comments

Verdict: False

Claim:

On Tuesday, July 28, 2020, the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) fact-checkers spotted a picture of President Muhammadu Buhari sitting with six people in a room.

The viral photograph shared on Facebook claims the President met with five Local Government Area chairmen of Jibia, Safana, Faskari, Danmusa and Sabuwa all in Katsina state over insecurity issues.

The picture with the Hausa caption created the impression that President Buhari discussed banditry and growing insecurity in his home state.

FACT:

An investigation conducted by CDD fact-checkers shows that contrary to the claim widely shared on Facebook, those in the picture were not chairmen of Sabuwa, Safana, Batsari, Faskari and Danmusa LGAs of Katsina State.

The other men in the picture are African leaders who met with President Buhari during his visit to Mali on Tuesday, July 23, 2020.

The Africa leaders in the picture are President Muhammadu Buhari, Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger and President Ibrahim Keita of Mali.

Others are President Machy Sall of Senegal; Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana; Alassane Ouattara of Cote d’Ivoire and the ECOWAS Special Envoy, former President Goodluck Jonathan.

CDD fact-checks also show that the African leaders met with President Buhari as part of the intervention to resolve the political crisis in Mali.

CONCLUSION

The picture circulating on Facebook claiming President Buhari had a meeting with five LGA chairmen in Katsina over insecurity is false.

The people in the picture taken on Tuesday, July 23, 2020, are African leaders who met with the President during his visit to Mali.

CDD urges members of the public to disregard the picture and stop sharing it.

FACT CHECK: Is Buhari the Most Followed African Leader on Twitter?

By Fact CheckNo Comments

VERDICT: False

CLAIM:

On Wednesday, July 22, 2020, the News agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that President Muhammadu Buhari is the most followed African leader on twitter.

NAN, in its report, quoted a report, Twiplomacy Study 2020, which was also used by several online media platforms including Vanguard News, PMNews online, Newswireng, Pulse NigeriaAll Africa.

FACT:

An investigation by fact-checkers at the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) shows that President Buhari is not Africa’s most-followed leader on Twitter.

A check on the microblogging site, Twitter which Twiplomacy used in its ratings show that the President of Egypt, Abdelfattah Elsisi (@AlsisiOfficial) is the most followed African leader on the social media platform with 4,133,263 followers compared to @MBuhari who has 3,121,169 followers.

Also, in its report, Twiplomacy indicated that President Buhari is the most followed sub-Saharan African leader and not Africa’s most-followed president on Twitter. The Twiplomcy report quoted by NAN was specific about the details.

Part of the Twiplomacy report reads ‘’Muhammadu Buhari, the president of Nigeria, is by far the most followed Sub-Saharan African leader with 3,121,169 followers ahead of Paul Kagame the president of Rwanda with 1,910,159 followers.’’

There are 46 of Africa’s 54 countries in “sub-Saharan”, which excludes Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Somalia, Sudan, Algeria, Djibouti and Tunisia.

Sub-Saharan Africa is geographically the area of the continent of Africa that lies south of the Sahara.

CONCLUSION

The claim that President Buhari is the most followed leader in Africa on twitter is false.

Egypt’s President @AlsisiOfficial is the most followed African leader on Twitter with 4,133,263 as at 10 AM July 23, 2020.

CDD, therefore, urges members of the public to always verify all information before disseminating them.
