FACT CHECK: Is NCDC Disbursing COVID-19 Funds?

By Blog, ECOWAS Fake News Reports, Fact Check, Funding TrendsNo Comments

A WhatsApp message shared in many groups claimed that the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is disbursing Covid-19 funds to Nigerians.

The message asked Nigerians to call a particular number to get N75,000 from the agency.

The WhatsApp message reads, “CONGRATULATIONS. DUE TO THE COVID19  YOU HAVE JUST WON N75,000 FROM NCDC. CALL MR EMMANUEL 0807352**** FOR CLAIMS NOW.”

Another message reads “Congratulations N80,000 have (sic) been approved by the federal government to you lucky Nigerian due to PANDEMIC. Drop your account number.”

Is the claim true?

Since the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, federal state and local governments have been distributing palliatives to citizens to cushion the effect of the pandemic. To complement the efforts of the government, the private sector has also donated billions of naira under Private Sector Coalition against COVID-19 (CACOVID).

One of those interventions by the federal government, according to Minister of State, Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mariam Katagum, is MSME Survival Fund Scheme.

The funds were disbursed in five modes under the Nigeria Economic Sustainability Plan (NESP) approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in July 2020.

They include: Payroll Support Scheme, Artisan and Transport Scheme, Formalization Support Scheme, General MSME Grants and Guaranteed Off-take Scheme.

She said the federal government had so far disbursed N56.8 billion and individuals were selected based on merit.

Similarly, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) announced a N50 billion Targeted Credit Facility (TCF) in March 2020 as part of a stimulus package to help mitigate the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the economy and businesses.

The TCF was to support households and micro, small, and medium enterprises affected by the pandemic.

However, there has not been anytime that the federal government through the NCDC shared cash prices to Nigerians.

On its Twitter handle, the NCDC has debunked the claim of distributing cash to Nigerians, describing it as “fake news”

The NCDC also urged Nigerians to disregard the message as it is aimed at defrauding innocent Nigerians.

Conclusion: Although the federal government has rolled out several Interventions to cushion the effect of COVID-19 pandemic, the NCDC is not disbursing Covid-19 funds to Nigeria. Hence, the viral WhatsApp message is false.

CDD NEWSLETTER FOR THE WEEK ENDING MARCH 14, 2021

By Fact Check

The second wave of the Coronavirus (COVID-19), the mutation of the virus into various variants, and the roll-out of COVID-19 vaccination by several countries in Africa, including Nigeria, South Africa,  Ghana, and Ivory Coast has led to the spread of disinformation and conspiracy theories around the vaccines.

According to medical experts, vaccination is the single most efficient way to reduce deaths and severe illness from COVID-19. For the world to fully beat the pandemic, all hands must be on the deck to fight misinformation arising from them.

On the other hand, the spread of disinformation, conspiracy theories and fake news surrounding vaccines is the single most effective way to keep the pandemic going.

In the last one week, online conversations have been dominated by vaccine production, its acceptance by the public and the administration. While one cannot deny that vaccines have side effects – all vaccines and medicines have some side effects – these side effects need to be constantly balanced against the expected benefits in preventing illness.

With the social media space flooded with various claims on the side effects of the COVID-19 vaccines, the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) have continued to call for verification of all information before sharing.

The Facts

FGN Did Not Buy WhatsApp Messaging App for 3BN

On March 10, 2021, the CDD spotted a post on Facebook claiming that messaging Application, WhatsApp, has been bought by the Nigerian Government.

The Facebook user claimed said the application was bought by the Federal Government of Nigeria at the sum of three billion (no currency was indicated).

Also, the post claimed that all users of WhatsApp should endeavour to leave the app immediately to another one (signal App) as they would now be monitored by the Nigerian government.

The claim read in part: “You will be tracked! Leave WhatsApp now! Go to Signal app now!” reads an excerpt from the post. Signal is an end-to-end encrypted instant messaging app.”

Checks by CDD show that contrary to the claim, the Nigerian Government has not acquired WhatsApp messaging app.

An investigation by CDD also shows that the post made on Facebook by a handler, “Best of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu” has been marked by the social media company as fake news.

Facebook in a reaction to the post said that the information made by the handler has been checked by independent fact-checkers and confirmed to be false.

A further check showed that the social media company in a response to AFP described the information as false.

On Thursday, March 4, 2021, fact-checkers at the CDD spotted a WhatsApp audio recording claiming that Sheikh Sharif Saleh made comments on the recent Sheikh Abduljabbar’s preaching suspension saga.

In the recording – done in Hausa – a commentator (claiming to be the voice of Sheikh Saleh) expressed disappointment on the decision to suspend the cleric from conducting preaching activities in Kano State.

He said information available to him indicates that Sheikh Kabara’s worship centre has been sealed off by the Kano State Government.

He said the sealing of the worship centre is a gang up against Sunni clerics, Darika and other sects.

The commentator continued: “The method used by the clerics sounds funny and embarrassing and any responsible person that knows about the matter will understand that he was treated unfairly because his statements were shortened and edited”

An investigation conducted by CDD on the viral audio clip established showed that as of March 11, 2021, Sheikh Shariff Saleh, has not reacted to the suspension of Sheikh Kabara as claimed in the WhatsApp audio.

Checks by the CDD also revealed that the voice in the audio circulated on WhatsApp is not Sheikh Saleh’s.

When contacted on the matter, Sheikh Saleh’s so, Engr. Almuntasir Ibrahim Saleh Al-Hussain told the CDD fact-checker that the claim in the audio is false.

Al-Husain said his father never said anything on the suspension of Sheikh Kabara.

“Well, I listened to the said audio clip that was trending on WhatsApp, and I can categorically confirm to you that neither the voice nor the content is Sheikh’s and even the message does not reflect Maulana’s opinion on this matter in any way,” Al-Hussain said.

FACT-CHECK: Has WHO Made A U-turn On Isolation and Social Distancing?

By Fact Check

VERDICT: False

CLAIM: On February 25, 2021, fact-checkers at the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) spotted a WhatsApp broadcast claiming that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has completely made a U-turn on Coronavirus (COVID-19) protocols and guidelines.

The broadcast claimed that the international health body made a declaration that individuals infected with COVID-19 do not need to be isolated or quarantined as the virus cannot be transmitted from one patient to another.

FACT:

Checks by CDD show that the claim that WHO has declared that individuals infected with COVID-19 need not isolate is False. An investigation carried out by CDD fact-checkers reveals that the claim is not new and had trended on July 16, 2020.

The broadcast resurfaced on WhatsApp has continued to be spread across groups on the platform.

Further checks show in its advice on preventive measures against COVID-19, the WHO has continued to urge the public to public themselves and their loved ones by taking some simple precautions, such as physical distancing and wearing a mask.

Also, WHO notes that keeping rooms well ventilated, avoiding crowds, cleaning your hands, and coughing into a bent elbow or tissue are also imperative in protecting oneself and others.

CONCLUSION

CDD can confirm that the claim on WhatsApp that WHO has completely made a U-turn on social distancing and isolation measures needed to curb COVID-19 spread is false.

The CDD urges members of the public to read beyond headlines before sharing any news report, especially on social media.

FACT-CHECK: Bill Gates Did Not Say “Next Pandemic Is Coming After COVID-19”

By Fact Check

VERDICT: Misleading Headline

CLAIM: On Tuesday, February 9, 2021, fact-checkers at the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) spotted a headline on MSNBC’s YouTube channel, which trendedon several WhatsApp groups, claiming that Bill Gates had warned that a “Next Pandemic” is coming after COVID-19.

FACT:

Investigations by CDD fact-checkers show that Bill Gates did not state that the “Next Pandemic” is coming but urged the world to be ready as there would be another pandemic.

He said in response to a question on the key steps to take concerning the pandemic:

“We have to do two things at once, We have to bring this epidemic to an end primarily by getting the vaccine out in large numbers to the entire world and we have to make sure we are ready because there will be another pandemic,” Mr. Gates said in the interview.

However, MSNBC’s headline suggests that Mr. Gates had warned that there would be another pandemic immediately after COVID-19.

While it is a known fact that there would always be a pandemic, it is not a known fact that another pandemic would occur after COVID-19. Most importantly, Bill Gates did not in his statement say so too.

Mr. Gates is among the leading few advocating for global vaccination against Coronavirus (COVID-19) disease. His call for vaccination has lead to a backlash from several quarters including religious leaders across the globe. He  has been a subject of several conspiracy theories, including the aim to depopulate the world

CONCLUSION

The MSNBC headline report that Bill Gates had warned that a “Next Pandemic is coming after COVID-19″ is misleading.

The CDD urges the media on accurate reporting, avoiding sensational headline and members of the public to read beyond headlines before sharing any news report, especially on social media.

By Fact Check

Nigeria is among the countries yet to procure Coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine. Reports indicate that the country is expecting 16 million doses of the vaccine through the global COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX) arrangement. COVAX is a global initiative aimed at equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines led by the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization, the World Health Organization, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, and others.

Since the announcement of its plan to procure vaccines for the people by the Nigerian Government, broadcast messages are spreading fast on WhatsApp and even conventional media organisations have joined the bandwagon disseminating misinformation on the vaccines, procurement, and administration. This has continued to promote skepticism and persuade the public to reject the shots, which can break the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

Misinformation is doing great damage to Nigeria’s effort at halting the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. And both misinformation and disinformation can erode trust in both civil and corporate institutions. Such institutions include government health institutions and big non-government institutions like the World Health Organization.

In the past week, the Punch newspaper published a report that claimed the WHO had disqualified Nigeria from a global vaccine bid. They referred to a press from the WHO.

The reaction to this was instant. the report went viral. Other platforms were quick to publish the misinformation. The Punch Newspaper has since updated its report to the true position of the WHO. But the episode leaves not much to be desired about how Nigerians trust the present government to deliver safe and effective vaccines to the citizens.

The Facts

The WHO representative in Nigeria, Dr. W. Kazadi Mulombo said the ‘’WHO is part of Covax facility and can never disqualify a Member State from accessing an approved vaccine for their population.’’

He made this known via his Twitter handle @WMulombo, He went further to call on members of the press in Nigeria and globally to contribute to fighting misinformation around COVID-19.

In a press conference to address the issue, organized by the WHO in Nigeria and National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Kazadi said that “The World Health Organisation has not disqualified any country in Africa from accessing #COVID19 vaccines through the COVAX facility, but rather, is supporting all countries to access vaccines as quickly as possible.”

He went further to explain that in addition to the AstraZeneca doses, there is an initial limited volume of Pfizer vaccine available through COVAX.

“On the African continent, as if the 18th January, COVAX received 13 submissions and a multi-agency committee evaluated the proposals of which 9 were recommended as ready to deploy the Pfizer vaccine including Nigeria.” He said.

A review of the press briefing by Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, which the Punch Newspaper and others quoted shows the global health body did not disqualify Nigeria from any global vaccine bid.

’In much-awaited news, the COVAX facility has informed African countries of the first allocations of the COVID-19 vaccine. Nearly 90 million doses of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine could start arriving on the continent later this month. This is subject to WHO listing the vaccine for emergency use. The review is ongoing, and its outcome is expected soon.’’ She said.

The press statement also explained that proposals for the initial 320,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to be allocated to four African countries were evaluated based on current mortality rates, new cases, and trends, and capacities to store the vaccine at minus 70 degrees Celsius. The countries are Cape Verde, Rwanda, South Africa, and Tunisia.

Fact-checkers at the CDD also went through the Gavi website to ascertain if Nigeria has been disqualified.

Gavi is co-leading COVAX, the vaccines pillar of the Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator. This involves coordinating the COVAX Facility, a global risk-sharing mechanism for pooled procurement and equitable distribution of eventual COVID-19 vaccines.

The COVAX Interim Distribution Forecast shows Nigeria is in line to receive 16,000,000 doses of vaccines through the facility.

WhatsApp Messages

Facebook Messenger and Whatsapp handle 60 billion messages a day. Not all these messages are true. The majority of messages shared online are either scams, fake or misleading.

For instance, On Sunday 31st January 2021, our fact-checkers spotted a WhatsApp broadcast with the claim that the National Identification Management Commission (NIMC) is giving out five (5) Gigabytes worth of data to verified mobile phone numbers.

The message titled: “NIN verification” claimed that the NIMC would be rewarding customers who have been using their SIM cards for more than three months 5G worth of data.

It read in part: “NIN VERIFICATION Check if Your number have [sic] been chosen by NIN to receive 5GB. As Part of the Verification REWARD Program for who [sic] have been using the sim for more than three months. ALL NETWORK USERS Deadline:30-01-2021 2021-2-29

Also attached to the message is a link that can be used by interested applicants for the verification process.

Investigations carried out by CDD fact-checkers revealed that the claim is false. Checks showed that the link provided is a bait normally used by internet fraudsters to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians.

Our fact-checkers found out that the link upon registration provides a three(3) way verification process where users are required to key in their numbers, share the same message on WhatsApp, and await their share of the said reward.

Further investigations by CDD revealed that the site promised applicants N10,000 in addition to the 5G data. It also provided a section for comments where previous beneficiaries give their “testimonies” – a method frequently used by fraudsters to defraud unsuspecting applicants of such scheme.

Police IG Did Not Handover

On February 2, 2021, fact-checkers at the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) spotted a report on OperaNews blog claiming that the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, had finally handed the NPF mantle of leadership to his successor.

The report also claimed that IGP Adamu having completed his mandatory 35-years of service with the Nigeria Police Force handed over to Sanusi Lemo, a Deputy Inspector General of Police in-charge of operations at the Force Headquarters.

Checks by CDD fact-checkers show that as of the time of writing this report, Wednesday, February 3, 2021, IGP Adamu is still the Inspector General of Police in Nigeria.

IGP Adamu has not handed over to DIG Lemo or any other successor as claimed by the news blog.

Also, reacting to the report, the Force Public Relations Officer, Commissioner of Police Frank Mba, said the claim is false.

Mba, in an interview with the Nation Newspaper on Tuesday, February 2, 2021, said reports that the IGP has stepped aside and handed over activities at the Force Headquarters to DIG Lemo should be disregarded.

Also, the approval of a new IGP is usually announced by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. However, as at the time of writing this report, President Muhammadu Buhari is yet to make such an announcement approving the retirement and further replacement of the IGP. Read the report here

FACT-CHECK: Did WHO Disqualify Nigeria From Global Vaccine Bid?

By Fact Check

VERDICT: Misleading

On February 6, 2021, the Punch Newspaper published a report online with the headline, “WHO disqualifies Nigeria, eight others from global vaccine bid.”

The report claimed that the World Health Organisation-led COVAX global initiative has disqualified Nigeria and eight other countries for bidding for the Pfizer vaccines.

According to the report, WHO’s decision follows Nigeria’s inability to meet the standard requirement needed for storage of the vaccines at the required -70 degrees Celsius.

FACT:

The report by Punch newspaper on the disqualification of Nigeria from the Pfizer vaccine bid is false.

The WHO representative in Nigeria, Dr. W. Kazadi Mulombo said the ‘’WHO is part of Covax facility and can never disqualify a Member State from accessing an approved vaccine for their population.’’

Dr. Mulombo made this known through his Twitter handle @WMulombo.

He further to called on members of the press in Nigeria and globally to contribute to fighting misinformation around COVID-19.

In a press conference to address the issue, organized by the WHO in Nigeria and National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Kazadio said that “The World Health Organisation has not disqualified any country in Africa from accessing #COVID19 vaccines through the COVAX facility, but rather, is supporting all countries to access vaccines as quickly as possible.”

“On the African continent, as of the 18th January, COVAX received 13 submissions and a multi-agency committee evaluated the proposals of which 9 were recommended as ready to deploy the Pfizer vaccine including Nigeria,” Mulombo said.

Also, a review of the press briefing by Dr Matshidiso Moeti, World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, which the Punch Newspaper and others relied on to publish the report shows that the global health body did not disqualify Nigeria from any global vaccine bid.

In much-awaited news, the COVAX facility has informed African countries of the first allocations of the COVID-19 vaccine. Nearly 90 million doses of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine could start arriving on the continent later this month. This is subject to WHO listing the vaccine for emergency use. Gavi is co-leading COVAX, the vaccines pillar of the Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator. The CDD discovered that COVAX Interim Distribution Forecast shows that Nigeria is in line to receive 16,000,000 doses of vaccines through the facility.

CONCLUSION

The claim by the Punch Newspaper in its frontpage headline that the WHO has disqualified Nigeria from the global vaccine bid is false.

Evidence shows Nigeria is still part of the COVAX -Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator.

FACT-CHECK: Is There Tension in Lagos over COVID-19 Vaccine Administration?

By Fact Check

VERDICT: False

CLAIM:

On Sunday, January 31, 2021, fact-checkers at the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) received a 51 seconds audio message composed in Hausa. The message circulated on various WhatsApp groups claimed that there is panic in Lagos State and that people are running away from health personnel who have been mandated to administer the COVID-19 vaccine.

Part of the message said: “Panic in Lagos, people are running as COVID-19 injection is being administered.

“It’s the Europeans that created the vaccine when they tested it on 1000 people in Britain, 600 out of that number died that’s the reason they want to now run a test on the blacks. May God save us,” it added.

FACT:

An investigation carried out by CDD revealed that the claim that there is panic in the state because health workers were administrating the COVID-19 vaccine is false.

Evidence on the ground shows that Nigeria is yet to procure the COVID-19 vaccine let alone begin the process of administering it to citizens.

Therefore, the claim that people in Lagos are running away from health personnel distributing the vaccine is false.

Also, a report on AfricaNews which quoted the Director-General of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr Faisal Shuaib, said Nigeria will receive 100,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine by early February. The report

Dr Shuaib said: “What we do have coming to the country is the Pfizer vaccines that require about -70 degrees Celsius”

Conclusion:

The audio clip being circulated on WhatsApp claiming that people in Lagos are running away from health workers administering the COVID-19 vaccine is false.

As of the time of this report, the vaccines are yet to arrive in Nigeria. Lagos is calm and people are going about their normal activities contrary to the claim that there is tension.

CDD urges the public to disregard the claim and stop sharing it.

CDD calls on Nigerians to always verify the authenticity stories before sharing them. You can also forward suspicious messages for verification via WhatsApp to +2349062910568 or contact us on Twitter @CDDWestAfrica

FACT-CHECK: Remdesivir Not COVID-19 Vaccine Only Distributed In Africa

By Fact Check

VERDICT: FALSE

CLAIM: Since September 2020, multiple users on Social media have shared an image that shows a picture of a medicine box for “Cipremi”, which is described as “Remdesivir for Injection”.

The image is accompanied by a claim that it is a COVID-19 vaccine to be tested on only Africans. With the role out of Coronavirus vaccines across the globe, the claim has gone viral in recent weeks.

Most of these social media post suggested that Africans are going to be ‘used as guinea pigs’ to test the vaccine or there is a sinister motive behind why is marked to be distributed only in Africa. Ozolua. O. Giwa-Amu shared it here which was reshared by popular former Minister of Aviation and conspiracy theorist Femi Fani-Kayode.

Most comments under the posts have also suggested Remdesivir is a vaccine.

FACT: Remdesivir is not a COVID-19 vaccineInformation on Gilead Sciences, Inc, original makers of Remdesivir, the website says Remdesivir is an investigational antiviral for the treatment of COVID-19 to treat pediatric patients less than 12 years of age or weighing 3.5 kg to less than 40 kg with coronavirus disease  (COVID-19) caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Responding on Twitter, Cipla South Africa said ‘’Remdesivir, is used in the management of severe COVID-19 disease, is not a COVID-19 vaccine. The label restriction indicates territories not licensed to Cipla for supply. For more details about the license agreement, please visit’’Voluntary Licensing Agreements for Remdesivir.

Under the licensing agreements, which included Cipla, the companies have a right to receive a technology transfer of the Gilead manufacturing process for Remdesivir to enable them to scale up production more quickly.

Why Only In Africa?

Gilead went further to state that ‘’the licensees also set their own prices for the generic product they produce, a post by Reuters.

It also noted that the licenses are royalty-free until the World Health Organization declares the end of the Public Health Emergency of International Concern regarding COVID-19.

“Or until a pharmaceutical product other than remdesivir or a vaccine is approved to treat or prevent COVID-19, whichever is earlier.’’

The agreements permit distribution in Vietnam, Ukraine, Thailand, Zambia, Togo, South Africa, North Korea, Cuba are among the 127 countries include most African countries.

Our fact-checkers also spoke to Professor Morenike Ukpong, Department of Child Dental Health Faculty of Dentistry College of Health Sciences, Obafemi Awolowo University, who said such an occurrence was not strange. She said such is called differential pricing and countries can negotiate upfront for this when involved in clinical trials for drug development.

‘’Many companies as part of things social responsibility produce brands that are cheaper but not of inferior quality for low-income countries. They label it so it does not find its way back into high-income countries where they will now make an excessive margin.’’ She said.

The claim that the drug is not in use in Europe is also false. The European Union (EU) signed a €63 million contract with Gilead Science in July 2020 to make Remdisivir available in its 27 member states. Stella Kyriakides, the EU Commissioner of Food and Health Safety, said the medication will be provided to 30,000 patients with severe symptoms of Covid-19 in a press release on July 9, 2020.

CONCLUSION

The claim that Cipremi”, which is described as “Remdesivir for Injection” is a COVID-19 vaccine to be tested on only Africans is false. It is not a vaccine, it is an anti-viral drug used to manage severe COVID-19.

CDD is urging members of the public to verify all information before they share with their audience.

FACT-CHECK: Prof Ebere Onwudiwe Not In Dollar Spraying Trending Video

By Fact Check

VERDICT: False and Misleading

CLAIM: On Monday, January 11, 2021, the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) spotted a trending video of a group of people particularly men dressed in white attire and off-white hats spraying Dollar notes in the air in an event.

The video widely spread on WhatsApp with the claim that the event was the traditional chieftaincy installation of Professor Ebere Onwudiwe, as the Mba 1 of Isunjaba, a ceremony that took place on December 27, 2020.  Prof Onwudiwe died from COVID-19 related complication on January 9, 2021.

Prof Onwudiwe until his death was a professor of Political Science Emeritus at the Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, and a Distinguished Fellow at the CDD.

FACT:

A review of the video by CDD fact-checkers using evidence-based technology identified the people in the video as members of the social group, the Asian Tigers, which is displayed on the off-white hat. The group’s membership is largely from Anambra State, South-East Nigeria.

Further fact checks proved that the men in the video attended a traditional wedding ceremony in Agulu, in that state. CDD spotted other videos of the Asian Tigers using tech,  CDD found  Ufo Solomon’s Facebook page, an ardent follower of the Asian Tigers; and  Okafor Ukay’s account, who claimed to be members of Asian Tigers, in  Qatar.

One of the videos posted by Ufo Solomon in January 2020, exactly a year earlier, shows the group spaying money at the House Warming of one of their members, confirming a norm in the manner the group display currencies in their events.

Fact-checkers can independently confirm that that Professor Onwudiwe was not a member of the group and therefore there was no way they will attend  “his installation’’.

The claim originated from a piece: “The Njaba Super Spreader Event by Joel Nwokeoma” on Saturday, January 9, 2021. In the piece, Nwokeoma had warned residents of the Njaba community to self-isolate, shortly after the death of Prof. Onwudiwe was announced.

The piece by Nwokeoma was subsequently shared on Facebook by a Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Political Matters, Babafemi Ojodu. The Facebook post accompanied by the Asian Tiger video has since gone viral.

In a quick reaction, Nwokeoma posted a disclaimer on his Facebook page that said, “evidently, a mischief-maker attached it (the video) to the apt post which has since gone viral”.

Nwokeoma added: “The video should be regarded as what it is, fake and concocted, and therefore discountenanced.”

Also, CDD contacted Nigerian journalist, Ray Ekpu, an associate of Prof Onwudiwe, who was present at the chieftaincy event in Isunjaba. Premium Times had earlier quoted Mr. Ekpu when it reported the death of the Professor.

Mr Ekpu confirmed the trending video as a false representation of Prof Onwudiwe and the event of his chieftaincy installation in Isunjaba.

He said that the chieftaincy installation was a very restricted ceremony, which according to him took place in an open space, with only four persons, including Prof Onwudiwe, Prof Pat Utomi, himself and another individual, the ceremony which lasted within 30 minutes.

Mr Ekpu further stated while there were people at the occasion, the open arena where the rites of conferment were performed by the traditional ruler had only five people present.

According to Mr. Ekpu, there was no band and no music at the ceremony so the question of spraying money was not an issue.

He also added that the ceremony was as solemn.

CONCLUSION

The claim that the group of men in a white dress and white hat spraying dollars in the air was attending the installation of Prof EbereOnwudiwe is false.

FACT-CHECK: 200 ECWA Members Did Not Die of COVID-19

By Fact Check

VERDICT: False

CLAIM: On January 11, 2020, fact-checkers at the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) spotted a report on TrueTellsNigeria” with the headline: BREAKING NEWS: 200 ECWA Church Members Die Of COVID-19.

The claim also published by a blog – Akpraise – with the headline: Popular Nigerian Church Mourns As 200 Members Are Allegedly killed By COVID-19 said that the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) had on Saturday, January 9, 2021, announced the death of 200 of its mission supporters from complications of Coronavirus (COVID-19).

A screenshot of the blog post

According to the report, the announcement was made by ECWA’s President, Reverend Dr. Stephen Baba, while officiating the funeral service of one of the church’s members, Yakubu Kadiya, at Kent Academy Miango, Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.

FACT:

Checks by CDD fact-checkers showed that the reports published by the blogs are false.

While debunking the claim, the public relations officer of ECWA Headquarters in Jos, Plateau State, Reverend Romanus Ebenwokodi, said the report is completely false.

Speaking to CDD fact-checker on phone, Ebenwokodi said Reverend Baba’s comments at the funeral in Plateau were taken out of context and used to misinform the general public.

He said Baba had at the funeral mentioned that 200 ECWA Mission’s supporters were affected by the economic hardship caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The clarification made by ECWA’s PRO in Jos was also reiterated in a statement subsequently released by the church and signed by Ebenwkodi.

The statement said that 200 ECWA Mission’s supporters did not die of COVID-19 as reported by some blogs.

In the statement, Ebenkwodi added that the Reverend Baba while speaking at the funeral of Yakubu had mentioned that over 200 Mission’s supporters of Evangelical Missionary Society (EMS) of ECWA were affected by the economic hardships caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The statement also said that pandemic, in turn, affected the church’s ability to continue with the Mission’s support in ECWA.

CONCLUSION

CDD can confirm that the claim that 200 ECWA members died of COVID-19 is false.

A comment made by ECWA’s Reverend that the COVID-19 pandemic affected over 200 Mission’s supporters of the church was taken out of context by some blogs.

CDD urges the media on accurate reporting and the public to always verify the authenticity of stories before sharing them.
