Job Summary

The Research Analyst will lead in the provision of support to the organisation’s evolving areas of analytical and programmatic expertise, especially in the areas of democratisation, security, emerging technologies, and sustainable development in West Africa.

Qualification and Experience

  • A master’s degree in the social sciences, law, or the humanities (though exceptional recent graduates will be considered).
  • Strong writing and analytical skills.
  • Exceptional organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated interested in and understanding of issues related to peace and mediation, conflict and insecurity, democracy and elections, women’s political participation and gender inequalities, disinformation, transitional justice, and how emerging technologies will affect politics and society. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Proficiency with entire Microsoft Office Suite and experience in multimedia production.
  • Experience in a non-profit, think tank, or analytical research role preferred.

Responsibilities  

  • Provide advanced analytical support to the research unit, including leading in drafting and authoring research briefs and memos on relevant issues. Contribute to the preparation of high-quality research outputs and multimedia products.
  • Provide on-call research to support preparation for meetings, events, publications, multimedia products, and research trips.
  • Attend relevant policy and scholarly events and provide a summary to research unit.
  • Consult a wide variety of news services and peer reviewed journals and prepare memo to brief the research unit staff on relevant and emerging trends in West Africa.
  • Effectively coordinate and manage the pool of research interns
  • Support in maintaining and developing external partnerships in private, public, and civil society sectors.
  • Liaise with our communications team to maximise the exposure of our research and advocacy.
  • Support in identifying new research and funding opportunities that have the potential for significant growth.
  • Undertake any other duties assigned by the Director of research.

  • Provide media relations support for all staff of the organisation including responding to requests and gathering input for talking points.
  • Draft press releases, statements and success stories of the organisation.
  • Provide support for the organisation’s public campaigns and events.
  • Lead in managing the organisation’s digital platforms.
  • Assist in Design and creation of social media content as well as content for all communication channels (website, social media, Basecamp, Mailchimp, Adobe Creative e.t.c)
  • Support in planning, monitoring and reporting of communication activities.
  • Participate on behalf of the organisation in work related external communication groups.

Responsibilities

  • The successful candidate will lead on Project development, fundraising and program management for the entire organization.
  • Provide leaders for the organization program department  and report to the Director;
  • Function as Head of the Program Team. Ensure effective team meeting. Maintain line supervision of all staff working in the program department. Evaluate program and project staff performance.
  • Identify new grant and project opportunities for the organization and play lead role in drafting proposals for fundraising and implementation.
  • Work in close collaboration with other heads of departments, sub-team leaders and other staff in the organization.
  • Participate in the regular meetings of the Senior Management Team as a member.

Call for Country Experts -Research Into The ‘Fake News’ Eco-system In West Africa

The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) is looking to recruit up to fifteen (15) researchers to undertake studies in each of the 15 ECOWAS member states (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Cote D’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo) that will assess the misinformation and disinformation eco-system.

Those selected will work with CDD’s research coordinator to produce a country report based on a review of relevant regional and country specific literature and key informant interviews. They will also be expected to participate in two (virtual) workshops – one at the start of the project to support the development of the key themes to be explore and one at the end to highlight key trends that can feed into a regional report.

Reports can be written in French or English but the applicant should have some grasp of English in order to participate in the proposed digital workshops.

The total number of working days for each country study is 15 (fifteen) with the bulk of the work scheduled to take place between April and July 2021.   

Interested applicants should have:

  • A university degree
  • A minimum of five years experience conducting or supporting research in the country(ies) of interest.
  • Specific experience working on issues of misinformation/disinformation; or social media; or communications; or other relevant areas.
  • Demonstratable contacts in the digital space in the country(ies) of expertise.

Introduction

The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) is an independent, not-for-profit, research, training, advocacy, and capacity building organisation established in the United Kingdom in 1997 and registered in Nigeria in 1999. The Centre was established to mobilise global opinion and resources for democratisation, development, and human security in West Africa. It also provides alternatives and best practices to the sustenance of democracy and development in the region. 

Mass media provide information for people at large so that there is acceptance of an idea to create interest. It has continued to play a vital role in influencing awareness level leading to changes in attitudes and behaviours of human being, which helps to inculcate positive values and norms in a society. Acknowledging this, the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD-West Africa) would be fostering positive social change in the Nigerian society around anti-corruption campaigns using the media by producing and disseminating strategic messages. It is against this backdrop that CDD-West Africa is publishing this advert for qualified vendors to submit a proposal (narrative and budget).

About SCRAP-C project

The Strengthening Citizen’s Resistance Against the prevalence of corruption (SCRAP-C) project aims to influence social norms and attitudes that help corruption to thrive in Nigeria to effect social change. The project leverages on social capital and social networks to promote a corruption adverse mentality. It also aims to build confidence in Nigerians and values around honesty, integrity, and transparency (HIT) and counter the pessimistic feelings of helplessness associated with the state of corruption in Nigeria.

SCRAP-C is being implemented by CDD together with other consortium and implementing partners. It is a 5-year project supported by DFID.

Scope of Work

  1. Radio drama script writer and a producer

It is well established that a good, quality and entertainment-based radio drama would engage, involve, and lean imprints on the audience, particularly on issues relating to corruption. Its impressionable impact on audience would unarguably lead to behavioural change.

CDD-West Africa would be interested in a radio drama script writer and producer that:

  • Raises the knowledge level of people on the strategic collective actions to be taken to mitigate it. This must take cognisance of socio-political, economic, and environmental contexts in Nigeria.
  • The scriptwriter is expected to produce the episode as well.
  • Showcase the impact of corruption (cost of corruption) in Nigeria.
  • Showcase the consequences of not taking actions to address the phenomenon of corruption.
  • Uses real-life issues/problems and what resonates with Nigerian (such as football) to drive conversation around the significance of collective actions to fight corruption in the country.
  • Has the capacity to raise people’s conscious, leading to behavioural changes on corruption-related issues for every Nigerians, irrespective of ethnic, religious, and political affiliations.
  • The drama series will be produced in five languages; Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa, Pidgin English and English language  
  • The total cost of production, broken down into budget lines.

The radio drama is expected to be produced in English, Pidgin English, Yoruba, Hausa, and Igbo languages.

2. Comedy for social change

Comedy is a powerful source of influence and information. It opens doors to complex issues, persuades people emotionally and can break down social barriers. CDD-West Africa is leveraging on comedy to bring people to understand the consequences and impacts of corruption in Nigeria. As such, the Centre is looking forward to receiving EoI from a qualified vendor on the production of comedy for social change that:

CDD-West Africa would be interested in a script writer and producer that:

  • Has persuasive power to change corruption averse mentality of Nigerians.
  • Capture attention cut through the clutter, provide access to new information and offer strategic ideas for collective actions against corruption.
  • An articulate specific call to action that is reflective of the realities of the day.
  • Is culturally sensitive and use satire to mobilise Nigerians to support anti-corruption campaigns.

The comedy for social change is also expected to be produced in English, Pidgin English, Yoruba, Hausa, and Igbo languages.

The technical proposal should include

The technical proposal should capture the following:

  1. The Comedy Script outline will be written in clear cut captioned messages being depicted in each scene.
  2. Production of the episodes will be in the five (5) selected languages; English, Pidgin English, Yoruba, Hausa, and Igbo languages.
  3. Details of technical production process and schedule.
  4. Experience of performing similar kind of tasks.
  5. The total cost of production, broken down into budget lines.

Any submission made by companies must be accompanied by a CAC registration certificate as well as sample work done in the past (if available).

Assessment and selection of proposals

Proposals will be evaluated using the following criteria:

  1. Clarity, creativity, contextually relevant, and coherent.
  2. Story/script outline and its ability to connect messages with the audience.
  3. Feasibility of the workplan

Introduction

The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) is an independent, not-for-profit, research, training, advocacy, and capacity building organisation established in the United Kingdom in 1997 and registered in Nigeria in 1999. The Centre is in search of a web designer who will redesign and manage the Upright4Nigeria anti-corruption website. The website would contain extensive anti-corruption materials, including knowledge products, news stories, captivating and edutaining videos, documentaries, etc. to enlighten the broad spectrum of Nigerians on the danger of corruption. It must be an efficient tool to raise awareness of anti-corruption issues and support the work of development practitioners and other stakeholders on social behavioural change on anti-corruption campaigns. It must also promote web-based whistle-blowing channel that allows Nigerians to report and get feedback on corrupt practices in their localities.

The work will cover the following activities:

  1. It must be UX/UI design based on best practices.
  2. Theme design and development.
  3. Setting up of CMS on the domain to enable the Centre maintains the site without requiring a dedicated workstation or additional software.
  4. Content entry. This will include text and pictures for each page to be created with the initial set-up
  5. Brower testing to ensure that it works with modern browsers on laptops, desktops and mobile phones.
  6. It must contain features that are reflective of the goal it is meant to serve as underscored above.
  7. It must be user friendly

  4. Experienced with front-end development frameworks;
  5. Extensive knowledge of device and cross-platform browser compatibility restrictions and requirements, including responsive web design;
  6. Experience in usability, user analysis and internationalization of web sites; · Expertise in using image editing/graphics tools and prototyping tools;
  7. Ability to estimate.

Job Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the communication unit of the organization.
  • Ensures the promotion of the organization’s brand identity.
  • Develop and implement an integrated and innovative communications strategy that supports the Centre’s work and goal.
  • Work with colleague to manage the Centre’s websites, print publications, social media channels, and other media outlet to promoting the work of the organization.
  • Coordinates and works with graphic designer/animation to develop compelling and effective visuals for amplifying the work of the Centre.
  • Write press statements on issues the organization is working on and coordinate its dissemination amongst media partners.
  • Develop and maintain a database of media partners.
  • Build and maintain relationships with journalists, bloggers, and media experts to advance our work

Person Specification

  • Master Degree in Mass Communication, English Language, Communication Art, Language Art or any related course.
  • Experience as an editor in a reputable newspaper house while not compulsory will be an advantage.
  • At least 3 years cognate experience
  • Fluency in both English and French is an advantage,
  • Experience in web design and content production is a plus
  • Solid understanding of project management principles
  • Working knowledge of MS Office; photo and video-editing software is an asset
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and presentation skills
  • Outstanding organizational and planning abilities
  • Excellent analytical, writing and ‘actioning’ skills

Core Responsibilities

  • To keep continuously abreast of developments in social and traditional media spaces on issues relating to politics and election ahead of the 2019 general elections;
  • To regularly identify fake news, misinformation and disinformation in the country;
  • To promptly respond to fake news, disinformation and misinformation by developing and releasing well-researched articles to counter them;
  • To use the tools of infographics, short videos, illustrations, etc, to widely disseminate responses and enlighten Nigerians on the effect of the phenomenon;
  • To work closely with social media influencers/enthusiast to publicize rebuttals and leverage on their platforms to neutralize the effects of fake news, misinformation and disinformation.

Educational qualification

  • First degree in Political Science, Development Studies and other relevant programmes
  • Experience:
  • Experienced in factchecking principles, techniques and methods.
  • Experienced in using social media platforms in professional capacity.

Project Title: De-radicalization, Counter- Terrorism and Migration in Northeast Nigeria (DCM Project)
The Project: The project aims to support the security agencies and civil society organizations in developing and disseminating counter-radical narratives to radical ideologies of fundamentalist groups in Nigeria.  It intends to address increasing distrust between the security agencies and the communities which has further accentuated the emergence of extremists and rendered ineffective government’s counter-terrorism measures, including the prevention of irregular migration. This Project will therefore focus on capacity-building and networking first for critical security institutions involve in stabilizing the geographical areas recovered by Nigerian government through its security institutions. The activities will be carried out across ten communities in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe who have been to be viable communities for the project. The concerned Agencies are: The Nigeria Police Force (NPF); Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Force (NSCDF); National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP); and the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS).
Activity
In an effort to effectively contribute to the of de-radicalisation and countering violent extremism (CVE) knowledge bank in Nigeria and the world over, a knowledge product containing good practices on countering violent extremism and the impact the DCM Project has made to the CVE landscape in Nigeria will be produced.
 
The centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) is hiring consultants to develop the knowledge document.
 
Key Responsibilities:

  • Propose a draft outline of the content of the Knowledge Product based.
  • Collect the relevant practical examples, comparative cases studies, videos and documentation
  • Facilitate a Methodology and Validation meeting
  • Develop a final version of the Knowledge Product after validation

 
Academic Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Administration or in any Social Sciences discipline. Additional training or experience in a broad range of related fields, such as mental health and stress related issues;

Experience:

  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience in training and development of training materials;
  • Proven experience in research and development of knowledge product documents Proven experience in writing manuals, booklets or similar training materials;
  • Proven and extensive experience in designing and developing reports and knowledge documents to finalized status;
  • Proven experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) is a requirement.

Scope of Work
To design monitoring and evaluation tool to assess change in knowledge and impact of the project. The consultant shall also be responsible for conducting on spot checks on the project activity to ensure it conform to design. Review, analyse and develop M&E plan and report to be submitted not longer than three days after completion of each activity.
 
Academic Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree preferred with substantial experience in M&E design and work. Previous M&E engagement in the North Nigeria is an added advantage.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in training and development of M&E tools;
  • Proven experience in research development and evidence based report writing
  • Proven experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) is a requirement.
