Sheikh Gumi Never Advised Buhari to Appoint Former Emir Sanusi as Chief of Staff

Claim: On Sunday, April 19, fact-checkers at the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) spotted a screenshot of a Facebook post claiming renowned Islamic cleric, Sheikh Dr Ahmad Mahmoud Gumi, has suggested the appointment of a former Emir of Kano as the new Chief of Staff (CoS) to President Muhammadu Buhari.

The post made at 12:29 pm on Saturday, April 18, 2020, claimed that the Sheikh, who is the Chief Imam of Sultan Bello Mosque, Kaduna called for Muhammadu Sanusi’s appointment as a replacement to the late Abba Kyari, former CoS to the President.

Fact: Investigation by CDD fact-checkers revealed that the claim is false.

CDD fact-checkers reached out to the Islamic cleric who denied making such a statement.

According to Sheikh Gumi:  “You are the ones breaking the news of the false claim against me, I am not aware of it. The matter of appointing another chief of staff is strictly a president’s matter; there is no way I will make such a suggestion to the President, the public should disregard the claim”.

Conclusion: Sheikh Gumi DID NOT advise  President Buhari to appoint former emir of Kano, Malam Muhammad Sanusi II as his new Chief of Staff. The news is fake.

CDD, therefore, urges the general public to disregard the report and always verify every information before disseminating them. #StopFakeNews
