Dr Sonny Onyegbula

Sonny Onyegbula was appointed the Deputy Team Leader for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and Ethiopia Human Rights Commission (OHCHR/EHRC) Joint investigation into the human rights abuses as a result of the conflict in the Tigray region of Ethiopia, in 2021. Before this assignment, he was a pioneer Africa/Southeast Asia Transitional Justice Fellow in 2002 with the International Center for Transitional Justice/ Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (ICTJ/IJR).

Before joining the United Nations, he worked as a Legal Counsel with the Constitutional Rights Project (CRP) in Nigeria and as Coordinator/Acting Director at the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) with offices in London and Nigeria.

He has nearly two decades of experience in transitional justice, peacebuilding and preventive diplomacy, and democratic governance, with research fellowships in Denmark, the United Kingdom, and South Africa.

Dr Onyegbula holds a Doctorate in International Law, a Masters in International Human Rights Law and Bacherlor degrees in Law.
