Sani Umar is a scholar of Islamic Studies and Comparative Religion and is a Professor in the Faculty of History in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

His areas of expertise include Islamic movements in Nigeria, Islam and Modernity, Religion, Violence and Peace-building, Countering Violent Extremism, History of Islamic Societies, Islamic Education in Nigeria, Islamic Civilization among others. In 2018, he was consulted by the Centre for Democracy and Development for its project on “Post Conflict Engagement in the Northeast, Nigeria’.

Umar holds a PhD in History and Literature of Religion from Northwestern University in Evanston, US, a Masters in Islamic Studies from Bayero University, Kano and a BA in Islamic Studies from the University of Jos.
