On April 8, 2020, the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) spotted a thirteen (13) seconds video clip circulating on WhatsApp and other social media platforms.
The video claimed that there was a suspected case of Coronavirus (COVID-19) in Ijebu street, Sabon Gari area, Fagge Local Government Area of Kano state.
In the 13 minutes narration done by a female, a footage showed some individuals disinfecting streets with spraying kit in a location while a passersby walked freely.
The narrator also said that: “They have found one victim in Ijebu road in Kano, please everybody should stay safe.”
An investigation by CDD fact checkers revealed that the COVID-19 Call Centre of the Kano state taskforce on COVID-19 had received a call of a sick person exhibiting some symptoms likened to COVID-19.
It was also gathered that a Rapid Response Team of public health personnel were deployed to the location.
The sick individual was attended to, his sample taken and examined and the result came out negative.
Also, in response to the claims, the Kano State’s Ministry of Health Information Officer, said the 42 suspected cases identified in the state all tested negative.
The person who recorded, applied narration and shared the video only did so based on assumption.
The video circulating on social media saying a Coronavirus case has been found in Kano is untrue. CDD urges people to continue to respect the preventive guidelines of preventing the virus and should not panic.
