Claim: The National Population Commission is recruiting staff for the upcoming 2023 census and is asking citizens to register via a link that is being circulated on social media
Context: A viral post on WhatsApp has been circulated asking citizens to register as ad-hoc staff for the upcoming 2023 census. The message in question reads:
“Please if you wish to apply as Ad-hoc Staff for the 2023 Nigerian Population Census by the National population commission, this is the link; https://recruitment.adhoctrial.nationalpopulation.gov.ng/nin
“You MUST have your National Identification Number (NIN). Please share with Family & Friends.”
Verification: Our partners at Daily Trust have ascertained that the message has been forwarded many times, a WhatsApp feature that allows users to see if a message has circulated widely. Subsequently, a contact at the National Population Commission debunked the claim and stated that “The commission had announced recruitment for ad-hoc staff in May for the trial census to conduct that would hold this month, so that’s the one currently being recycled as selections have already been made. It’s not true.” Furthermore, the link no longer works and corroborates the fact that it is no longer active.
Why We Checked This: Citizens across the country have been subject to job related scams and fraud. This is especially more pertinent since it asks for citizens to submit their National Identification Number (NIN) which could lead to identity theft and fraud. It is important that Nigerians remain vigilant when engaging with job adverts and rely on official platforms and sites before posting sensitive information.
