CLAIM: The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) asked Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, to step down as the party’s vice-presidential nominee

CONTEXT: A video circulating on social media shows a large crowd protesting against Okowa. The caption for the 56-second video is

“Breaking News: – HAPPENING Now. PDP in disarray…. Atiku Abubakar escapes lynching in Abuja at PDP meeting as members of the party asks Okowa to step down as Atiku’s running mate.”

VERDICT: FALSE

VERIFICATION: In verifying the claim, our partners at Daily Trust ran the video through Invid, a verification tool which revealed that the video first surfaced on the internet on 6 November, 2022. Subsequent checks revealed that the video was shot on Transcorp Hilton Abuja during the first series of town hall meetings with presidential candidates. The checks also revealed that the reason for the protest was the announcement that Okowa would represent Atiku at the presidential town hall, a developed that was not well-received by supporters of the other parties.

CONCLUSION: Verification by Daily Trust shows that the video in question did not emerge from any PDP party meeting. Also, the call for Okowa’s resignation is false as it was a group of audience asking Okowa not to stand in for the party’s presidential candidate who was absent at the town hall meeting.
