HIGH LEVEL POLICY DIALOGUE: MOROCCO’S ASCENSION TO ECOWAS
The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), in partnership with Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES), will hold a High-Level Policy Dialogue, to interrogate Morocco’s ascension to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The ECOWAS, aims to promote cooperation and integration in order to create an economic and monetary union for promoting economic growth and development in West Africa. The benefits accruable to its member States cut across economic, political and socio-cultural, this has enhanced trade, investment and free movements. Aside the economic and cultural interest, ECOWAS has also expanded its focus to actively engage in peace building, finding peaceful solutions to the civil wars in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea Bissau, Cote d’Ivoire and more recently in the Gambia, these efforts have yielded a mix of successes and failures. Morocco’s request to ECOWAS is proof that it intends to benefit from all the advantages associated with its status as the largest investor in Africa. However, this bid raises the question as to whether a country located in North Africa can join an organization in West Africa.
Consequently, it has become imperative for experts to underpin and interrogate the strength, opportunity, weakness and threat (SWOT) in the intercession of Morocco and ECOWAS’ member states. This is what brings to the fore, the need for Expert Policy Dialogue to provide an expert platform for exchange of insights into the ascension of Morocco to ECOWAS and to examine the opportunities and threats associated thereto.
The specific objectives: to interrogate and understand the incentive behind Morocco’s quest to join the ECOWAS and review the opportunities and otherwise with the country’s membership of ECOWAS and what it portends for the 15-member states.
The Policy Dialogue, which is scheduled to hold on Thursday, 24 August 2017, will bring together, relevant stakeholders, including national government, non-state actors, foreign affair experts, diplomats and the media to provide perspectives to political and economic implications of the ascension. Time for the event is 10:00am Prompt.
